The character creator (or character customization screen) allows players to define the look of their character in Ashes of Creation.[4]

The goal is to have a character creator that is on par with if not much better than what BDO provided.[6]

A character's voice may be able to be selected from preset options.[8]

Character appearance

There is a great variation that's going to be available from a character standpoint when creating your character, especially around the face. Whether it be the shape of the jawline, the cheeks, the ears, the nose, the lips. You know we want to provide a lot of options and an agency to the player to customize their character appearance.[10]Steven Sharif

We want there to be a lot of room for people to manifest their own identity, to role play how they want to from an appearance standpoint. There's going to be parameters within which you will be able to customize a character. We want the culture and the identity of the races to exist in a range that makes them easily identifiable from other players and other cultures. So, because of that, we have to have a spectrum you can exist on. There will be a lot of hair variants you can do, body art tattoos that you can apply. You'll be able to play with the scales of the facial structure, the bones, the height, width, the body fat percentage. You'll be able to add body hair on different parts of the body. If you want to have hair on your feet, you can dial that up.[14]Steven Sharif

Character appearance can be customized in the character creator (CC)[15] and via in-game salons/barbershops.[16]

  • Character models are focused on realism.[17]
  • A player will see a generic character before customization.[18]
  • Character designs will have influences from a wide range of cultures, such as European, African and Asian.[19]
  • Lolis will not be in the game.[20]

Sliders will offer flexibility in customization.[21] There will be limits to the amount of deformation possible for a character based on their race.[22]

  • Body type.[23][22]
    • Overweight, skinny, muscular.[24]
    • Body fat percentage.[14]
    • Bone structure.[14]
    • Height.[14]
      • You can't have a one inch tall character.[25]
    • Width.[14]
    • There will be "boobie sliders".[6][25]
      • The scale is not going to be ridiculous.[23]
    • Facial structure.[5][14]
      • Shape of the jawline/chin, cheeks, ears, nose, lips.[23][10]

Adjustments will allow a character to appear more feminine or masculine.[23]

  • These are relative to the character's race.[23]
    • Female Dwarven beards will not match that of the male. It will be more of a braided option that is not as voluminous.[14]

Character appearance is able to be saved to hard disc.[27]

A "default player appearance" may be automatically applied during sieges or other large scale battles to improve client-side performance.[28][29][30]

Cosmetic items

Cosmetic items allow players to customize their character in-game.[5]

  • Eye color.
  • Skin color.
  • Hair color.
  • Hairstyles.
  • Tattoos.
  • Scars.

Cosmetic items that produce in-game cosmetic effects will also be available.[31]

Dyeable items

Dyes only affect tagged portions of dyeable armor or cosmetic items.[32]

  • The dyeability of costumes depends on the specific costume.[32]

Outside of wanting to keep maybe some identity from a lore perspective; for example if you have like a white lion's suit of armor, you may not want that white lion suit of armor to be black or blue. So, it's possible. It depends on the costume itself.[32]Steven Sharif

Emoji

Emoji adds additional flare either for chat or character representation.[5] Emoji packs were available in the Kickstarter and Crowdfunding do verão campaigns at the Explorer level and above.[5]

There will be role-playing emoji such as dice rolling.[33]

Early access

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse may include an early access character creator.[9][34][35]

As we develop our character creation screen we'll implement that into arena mode. So can create characters there, save those characters. When you make a character in Ashes you can port over that save.[35]Steven Sharif

I would like to have the option for players to go in spend time, create characters save that character and then have it available in their suite their character creation suite as an option to preload at launch that they can take that's those settings and launch the character. I would love for there to be community rewards and competitions for the best made characters that we could do like a monthly kind of thing around and/or additionally I'd like for there to be implementation of housing and a housing suite that you can save your furniture load out as well for building out the interior of housing. I don't know if we'll be able to get to that. It is a cherry on top of the icing. And we'll see how the schedule looks with that regard.[37]Steven Sharif

Character page

A character web page (character sheet) will be available closer to live launch that shows the following:[38]

  • What a character looks like.[38]
  • Conquistas and server firsts.[38]
  • Info on a player's class.[38]
  • Character's back story via journal entries (that are shared publicly by the player).[39][40]
  • Traits can be applied that describe a character's history.[40]

You will have a unique homepage for each character and that homepage will be able to be customized by the user to display unique information. It will have a small out-of-game RPG component where you can construct background and traits and stuff like that.[40]Steven Sharif

The character page will be accessible in game by opening a browser through the UI.[39]

That's part of the character sheet desire for us which hopefully will be accessible in game as well by opening a browser through our UI where you can get back history of a character that that character has input themselves into journal entries that they may choose to share with others... For role play perspective we want people to be in depth with their characters.[39]Steven Sharif

The player can manage what info is shown on the character page.[38]

Character naming

Os personagens terão um nome próprio e um sobrenome opcional (sobrenome).[41]

Tulnar

Outdated Tulnar silhouettes. These do not represent the current state of game design.[44][45]

Tulnar is the only race with the capability to adjust racial appearance in a significant manner.[46]

  • Tulnar race does not have sub-types, instead, players will be able to customize the appearance of Tulnar characters.[47]
  • Players will have dials to adjust the reptilian, mammalian, humanoid, and other attributes of their Tulnar character in the Character creator.[48]
    • Mammalian Tulnar may have snout features, fur and inverted knees.[49]
    • Reptilian Tulnar may have more circular eyes and head shape, and scaly skin.[49]
  • Tulnar do not equal furries.[50]
    • There are bestial components that can be scaled up when creating a Tulnar character.[50]

Tulnar do not equal furries, but there are definitely some bestial components that you can scale up when you're creating your Tulnar character, so you could max that setting I guess. Whether or not that would give you what you would think of as a furry, I guess it's going to be up to your interpretation of what a Furry is.[50]Steven Sharif

Q: Will character creator allow us to make Tulnar that might look somewhat like Kobolds from Pathfinder or DnD?
A: I wouldn't say exactly, but there's definitely elements of Kobolds that you could incorporate in a character creator with the Tulnar, yes.[51]Steven Sharif

Racial skins

Racial skins enable a player to change their character's racial appearance.[52][53]

  • Racial skins transform the race of the character to that skin. The original racial appearance of the character is entirely replaced.[54]
  • Racial skins can be toggled on and off.[53]

You're changing your race over to that, which means that you won't look uniquely different if you were a Vek angel or a Human angel.[54]Steven Sharif

Racial skins are not costumes. This means that armor and character customization is possible on these.[55]

  • Skin color customization.[56]
  • Racial skins appear along with any costume appearances.[57]

There are plans to create other racial skins.[58]

  • Some potential future ideas include undead and werewolf (lycan) skins.[59]

Costumes

The costume cosmetics that are included in each month's pre-order set are indeed a full piece, and when you put it on it will cover your entire appearance. You will not be able to mix and match/toggle those pieces individually (other than your helmet) when you're wearing the entire costume. This is partially why there is a separate category for accessories - those are able to be worn/equipped on a more individualized basis, so you can mix and match to your liking![61]Sarah Flanagan

Costumes are available for purchase from the cosmetic store.

Full costumes do not mix and match pieces.[66]Steven Sharif

The costume cosmetic does not come in pieces. It will cover your entire set.[65]Margaret Krohn

Armor appearance

Alpha-1 female plate armor 3D render.[72]

We want to be realistic with the application of particular types of armor, such as plate armor. In this regard for the different sexes there's a fine line that has to be drawn between accentuating the form of the sex as well as making it somewhat realistic and actually applicable to the environment.[72]Steven Sharif

Gear is intended to be realistic in appearance.[73][74]

  • There will not be "oversized" weapons.[75]
  • Armor will not be overly sexual in appearance.[74]

We're going for kind of a more realistic look; not necessarily realistic setting, but we want our characters to have weight and kind of feel like they're there.[73]Jeffrey Bard

I'm more of the mind that it wouldn't really serve a purpose to have bikini plate armor, just in like reality, if you're going to have armor, it should be protective. I think from a fashion statement is enjoyable for some people, but it's a kind of an immersive issue.[73]Steven Sharif

Armadura will take on a racial appearance.[76]

Each race is getting its custom geo pieces, which then will share thematic components such as color palette, attachments, design filigree. Those types of things will get shared across the geo but generally you're going to see unique races with unique geo.[77]Steven Sharif

  • Cosméticos can be used by all races but there may be slight variations to make them work with the body builds of each race.[70]

Players can change gear colors using dyes.[78][79]

Helmet display can be toggled on and off.[80]

  • Hair will likely be masked if helmet display is toggled on.[81]

Particle effects are used to denote the importance and rarity of some weapons.[82]

Armas are able to be sheathed.[83]

Crafters are able to influence what their crafted items will look like.[84][85]

Appearance slots/Transmogs

Gear will have appearance slots (Transmutation/Transmog/cosmetic slots) that are used to copy the appearance of an item (in some cases).[86][87]

  • There are rules when applying cosmetics to specific items, unlike costumes, which don't have level restrictions.[62]
  • Cosmetic slots can be toggled on or off by the player.[88]
  • A "default player appearance" may be automatically applied during sieges or other large scale battles to improve client-side performance.[28][29]

Attachments

Attachments are able to be unlocked as flair pieces to armor to create a customizable look.[89]

  • There will be hundreds of attachments available ranging from a small clasp to the front plate of a breast plate.[89]

Modular armor

You can kind of start to see like some of the components that we put together that we can mix and match and kind of make new armors from. This is kind of like the base chassis for all of that.[90]Jeffrey Bard

Your base look for the character can be pretty boring, but what Steven gave us a challenge with from day one was to make sure even the base look, the t-shirt and pants, looked amazing... This is your zero character, if you will... Then you can go in and customize everything from the shoulder pads to the elbow pads, the belt that goes around them; do you want duel belts, you want to harness the clothes in the front. So every piece you see on here you can actually customize that at the front end. So what we do is we scale that up from zero, ten and twenty... We scale it up and we customize it; and then I want to really stress that each one of those looks as you progress is different. We're not just repurposing the same armor pieces. We're making unique sets that complement each other as you progress.[90]Mat Broome

Ashes of Creation Apocalypse will have three different armor themes: Plate, leather and robe.[91]

You can actually have three different types of themes: You have plate, you'll have leather and you'll have robe. So for every armor set that we're showing at each one of those tiers, you're actually gonna have nine unique looks to pick from.[91]Mat Broome
